Honoring a Mother-Daughter Nursing Legacy
Some nursing careers are sparked by a formative patient experience. Others, like Mallory Key’s, are shaped over time by the quiet example of a mother who showed what it truly means to care.
Mallory is a trauma surgery nurse and her mother, Michelle Wakefield, is a pediatric radiology nurse. Both have been honored for excellence in nursing this year. Michelle was selected from hundreds of nominees as one of Houston’s Top 200 Nurses for Houston Chronicle’s annual Salute to Nurses. Mallory is Texas Children’s Staff Nurse of the Year. Both have found purpose in their roles at Texas Children’s Hospital, where their shared commitment to compassionate, family-centered care continues to make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the unique bond of this mother and daughter, and the enduring legacy of nurses who inspire the next generation.
Michelle Wakefield: A Mother’s Pride in Her Daughter’s Nursing Journey
What does it mean to you to see your daughter follow in your footsteps as a nurse?
When I think back to when Mallory was just eight years old, watching me juggle full-time work and nursing school, I remember the late nights, the sacrifices, and the unwavering commitment it took to pursue this calling. She saw firsthand the dedication it requires to become a good nurse—and she never forgot it.
Today, Mallory has not only taken on the challenges of nursing but has excelled beyond measure. Through every hurdle, she has leaned on her faith in God and the strength of our family. Her passion, resilience, and compassion have propelled her forward, and she continues to rise to meet every challenge with grace and determination.
As her mother, I couldn’t be prouder. My heart beams with pride as I watch her provide the kind of care that reminds me why I chose this path myself. To witness her live out her purpose with such excellence is one of the greatest joys of my life.
In what ways has your daughter inspired you in your own nursing career?
As a mom, you always hope your children will carry forward the morals and values you’ve instilled in them—and Mallory has truly honored those lessons. Watching her grow into a compassionate and dedicated nurse is both humbling and inspiring. She reminds me every day why I chose this path, and she motivates me to continue giving my best and leading by example. My heart is full knowing that the same values she upholds will be passed on to her own daughters. It’s a beautiful legacy.
What are you most proud of when it comes to watching your daughter grow as a nurse?
I am in awe.
Mallory is an incredible nurse. She never stops learning, growing, and giving her whole heart to the work she does. She is deeply compassionate and grounded in her love for God, her family, and her patients.
The day she graduated from nursing school, I knew she was going to shine—but she’s done even more than that. She’s not only shared her own light with the world, she’s made my heart shine even brighter.
I am the proudest mom, and my heart beams with joy. Mallory isn’t just my daughter—she’s also my best friend.

Mallory Key: Following in Her Mother’s Footsteps with Purpose and Heart
What inspired you to follow in your mother’s footsteps and become a nurse?
Growing up, I watched my mother care for others with such compassion, strength, and grace—it left a lasting impression on me. She didn’t just treat patients; she connected with them, comforted them, and made a real difference in their lives. Seeing the impact she had, and the pride she took in her work, inspired me to follow in her footsteps. I knew early on that I wanted to be that kind of presence for someone else—to provide comfort in chaos and be a source of strength for families in their most vulnerable moments.
How has your relationship grown through your shared career in nursing?
It’s given us a deep understanding of each other’s challenges, triumphs, and the emotional weight that comes with the job. We speak the same language when it comes to long shifts, tough cases, and those rewarding moments that make it all worthwhile. She’s been not only a role model but also a mentor—someone I can turn to for advice, encouragement, or just to vent after a hard day.
What’s one piece of advice your mom has given you that has stuck with you throughout your career?
One piece of advice that my mother gave me when I started my career was to do everything with compassion and heart. She reminded me that every patient is someone’s loved one and that kindness can be just as powerful as medicine. God has blessed me with the talent and skill of caring for others. I strive to honor God and my mother with my everyday nursing practice.
