We are searching for a Surgical Technologist — someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. In this position, you will handle instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during congenital heart surgery procedures, assisting the physician while performing related patient care duties in an age-appropriate manner as assigned by the circulating nurse (RN).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Prepare and assist with the preparation of the CV operating room according to the needs and age appropriateness of the patient and the surgical procedure as evidenced by the following, but not limited to: knowledge of surgical pathology as related to the planned surgical intervention.

Apply knowledge of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon, having supplies opened or readily available in a cost-effective manner as observed by the circulating nurse/nurse manager.  

Seek the assistance of the circulating nurse and references the preference card when unable to make a decision regarding opening versus readily available.

Assist in the care and labeling of specimens 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse.

Acknowledge the importance of patient safety by participating in the Universal Protocol.

Scrub, and don gown and gloves in accordance with the Recommended Practices and within a reasonable time frame.

Assist in the maintenance of equipment and supplies by inspection, proper cleaning, care, and utilization according to company recommendations and the O.R. policy and procedures 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse.  

Set up back table, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery and the service 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse/nurse manager.

Utilize basic technical skills to implement the plan of care as exhibited by identified unit-base competencies and skills with no more than 5 exceptions, excluding written counseling.

Prepare CVOR equipment and supplies while performing patient care related duties in an age appropriate manner.

Communicate delays, or changes in the schedule to the charge nurse in a timely manner.

Implement safety measures that are appropriate to developmental age.

 

Skills & Requirements

Being Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19, Including Any Booster Dose(s) Of The COVID-19 Vaccine Recommended By The Centers For Disease Control When Eligible, Is Required For All Employees At Texas Children’s Unless Approved For A Medical Or Religious Exemption.

H.S. Diploma Or GED Required

Educational Program Completion For Surgical Technologists Which May Include Training Programs For Surgical Technology In The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Or Coast Guard Of The United States Or In The United States Public Health Service Required

CST-SUR - Cert-cert Surgical TECH Or TSC-NCCT - Cert-tech Surgery – Certified Required  

2 Years Or More Of Experience As A Surgical Technologist, With Experience In Two Or More Surgical Specialties Required

Some Cardiothoracic Operating Room Experience Or congenital Heart Surgery Experience Preferred
