We are searching for Critical Care Registered Nurses for our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) in the #1 Heart Center designated by U.S. News and World Report. Our team cares for children with the most complex congenital heart conditions. In this position, you will provide specialized nursing care to critically ill patients ranging in age from newborn throughout adolescence. You will learn to be skilled in caring for children with Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs), Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), advanced airways, and drip management.   

Our CICU is spread across 3 floors with patients in cohorts to positively impact patient outcomes. The 3 cohorts are: 

  • LT16: Heart Failure ICU 
  • LT17: Cardiac ICU 
  • LT18: Neonatal Cardiac ICU 

While the patients are in cohorts, the nursing staff work together as one unit. As a CICU nurse, you will care for patients in each of these cohorts. 

Think you have what it takes?  

  • Experience preferred in PICU, CICU, ICU 
  • Open to Cardiac step down/telemetry or Pediatric stepdown experience 

Qualifications:  

Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any booster dose(s) of the COVID-19 vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control when eligible, is required for all employees at Texas Children’s, unless approved for a medical or religious exemption. 

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or other degree in nursing with acceptance or current enrollment in a BSN program and signed agreement 
  • Current licensure with the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas required 
  • Current BLS certification required 
  • PALS preferred 
  • 1 year of professional nursing experience preferred 
  • The ability to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, time and resource management skills, flexibility, strong oral and written communication skills, and knowledge of the nursing process, critical thinking skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration 

Responsibilities: 

  • Performs and documents assessment of the patient/family including biophysical, psychosocial, developmental (age-appropriate), culture, spiritual, and environmental needs in an organized and systematic manner 
  • Analyzes situations, anticipates potential problems, and detects changes in patient status 
  • Re-prioritizes and updates plan of care based on new information and changes to the patient’s condition 
  • Communicates information to other health care team members and documents in the medical record 
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and/or patient care conferences and documents in the medical record 
  • Assists patients/family in implementing their role in the plan of care as appropriate 
  • Assess patient family learning needs capabilities, preferences, and readiness to learn prior to teaching 
  • Demonstrates positive and effective interpersonal skills when dealing with patients/families, visitors, peers, and other health care team members 
  • Administers and documents medications and treatments in a timely manner 
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to acquire new knowledge and utilize new skills needed to improve individual, team, and organizational performance 
  • Participate in unit performance improvement initiatives
